This module is an outstanding value. After install/setup, it provides a one-click backup of your DNN database as well as directories. It is ideal for both ensuring that you have an off-site backup, as well as for refreshing test/development servers with a copy of updated production data. There are a lot of options for backing up the database as well as compressing the database/files into .zip files, and it includes Zip64 for compressing databases > 2GB. I have used this modules for a couple of years now, and anytime I have encountered an issue, Evotiva has been very responsive with support / fixes.

Horacio responded to my problem (I had a DNN 4.0.2 install, and the module only worked properly with 4.0.3) within minutes. Not only did he respond faster than I respond to most personal friends, he recompiled the code so it would work with my older version of DNN and sent it to me the same day. Great!

Awesome module, in a great package with good documentation. I will never have to worry about installing another module without a current back up - your one button backup is perfect! This product belongs on EVERY site.

I've been using this module for a few months now and it is working well. A simple, workable solution for backing up your DNN sites. To verify the backup database and contents, I have restored them on my local machine and the site comes up just as it should!

Questions from other customers
Ask a Question
Q:  Im in need of a product that I can backup my database, then install the old db on a updated version of DNN. I also need to backup a SQL 2005 site, and restore it under a sql 2003 installation. Are either of these possible?
A:  The DNN site is the db+files. Both together. You cannot take a db and plug with other (not its) files. This will not work, no matter if you use a module or not. Backup a SQL 2005 and restore in SQL 2000 can be done with BackupScript (the other modue) if no unique SQL 2005 functionality was used (usually this is not a problem for DNN sites, which can run on either database). Just take care if you run a special custom made module. BackupNative produce native SQL Server's backups and a 2005 backup cannot be restored in a 2000 server.

Q:  I've just purchased BackupNative 3.0.2 Pro. Is it possible to schedule a backup at a certain time (for example at night when i'm not at the office)? Thank you for your time, Bert email: bemoo@hotmail.com
A:  Hello, The DNN Scheduled (due to its nature) does not allows this kind of configuration. We thought about a new setting to prevent execution at certain times, but is not the same and also the run cannot be guaranteed (again, due to the DNN's scheduler nature). Thanks, Horacio.-

Q:  I need to do a full backup of a dnn 3.2 and restore to dnn 4.5. Is this possible? If not how would I go about doing this. Also, where can I find more information about restoring backups? I have a dedicated server from MaximumASP with administrator login.
A:  If you backup a dnn 3.2, you will restore a dnn 3.2. The module does not perform any migration. Anyway, you can clone and safely upgrade to 4.5 the copy, the check if it goes fine. The module's doc (www.evotiva.com/backupnative) have some info about restoring with or without the module.

Q:  Hello, I am migrating from DNN 4.3.7 on MS SQL Express to DNN 4.5 on MS SQL Workgroup 2005 on a different server. Will your product accomplish this? I have already installed and setup DNN 4.5 on the new server.
A:  Hi. BackupNative (and BackupScript) helps you to "clone" a DNN installation but the upgrade should be done later. That is, first clone, and then upgrade.

Q:  Hi, Where do the database backup files get stored and are these files secured? We have dnn installed in d:\www\domain.com\www. Can your product store the backup files in d:\www\domain.com\database? Thanks in advance, Rutger
A:  Yes. You can specify a full folder name for the backup. e.g. "F:\myfolder\whatever".

Q:  Does your product support backing up and restoring indivdual portals? I would like to provide my customers with a backup of their portal and only their portal.
A:  This module does not support "by portal" backup and/or restore.

Q:  Has this been tested on DotNetNuke 4.4.0? If so, which version (release date) of BackupNative Pro should a person use on DNN 4.4.0 to have it work correctly? Thank you
A:  Yes. Current version (3.0.2) runs on 4.4.0 except the download links (you will have to download the backups by FTP until we find a workaround or the DNN Core team fix a possible bug. More info at: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/ForumsDotNetNuke/tabid/795/forumid/107/threadid/93917/scope/posts/Default.aspx

Q:  Hi, I am getting an error when attempting backups using BackupNative 3.0.2 with DNN4.x. Error: Evotiva.BackupNative is currently unavailable. DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: System.Exception: ERROR COMPRESSING THE PORTAL CONTENTS (DATA FILES AND FOLDERS). ---> System.IO.IOException: The process cannot access the file 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\DotNetNuke\Website\App_Data\Database.mdf' because it is being used by another process... Please advice how I can fix this. Also, is there a support email address I can use for contact rather than emailing through Snowcovered? Cheers.
A:  Hello, On the module's setting page, you have to add "\App_Data" to the "Exclude folders list" textbox setting. This way the database files will not be included on the portal files backup; but they will be saved on the "backup database" stage. You can contact us at support@evotiva.com. Regards.

Q:  Will this software work with Godaddy's shared hosting plan?? If so, I will buy it...... Thanks,
A:  Hi, BackupNative cannot work with Godaddy's shared hosting plan but BackupScript (http://www.evotiva.com/Modules/BackupScript/tabid/57/Default.aspx) will work great. Regards,

Q:  I am now hosted let's call it "hosting1" it has dnn 3.1.1 but I would like to move to another "better hosting"and Dnn version there will probably be different but still DNN3 do you think that I can backup al my contents ( text and pictures) from hosting1 and unpack it on other "better hosting"? Think of it like a luggage and travelling from hosting1 to better hosting... I really need some solution to help me move my site contents, but i am well aware that now almost nobody installs dnn3.1.1 so I have to think about jumping from one version to another too
A:  A safer option could be: backup your dnn 3.1.1 on "hosting1" Restore it locally and upgrade it to the target DNN version on the new hosting. Then backup/upload your local version to the new hosting. BUT, please note that when you backup/restore your site, the DNN is the same unless you try to restore your backup on a "blank" new DNN site. Also remember that this module moves the full site, not only one portal "living" on a DNN instance. HTH.

Q:  Hi will this work with sql server express 2005? we have some DNN instalations that have this but aren't sure if we can restore on the express edition of 2005 sql.
A:  Yes, it should work fine. Remember to exclude the "\App_data" folder on the "Folders exclude list" setting.

Q:  In an enterpise environment - you may want to be able to recover to the nearest - say half hour - is this possible with you module
A:  Yes, if you are performing continuous backups. You can schedule them, so theorically this can be possible; but depending on your data size this can be a time and resources (CPU, etc) consuming problem.

Q:  I have a multi-portal DotNetNuke installation in DNN 3.3.5 using SQL Server 2000 and due to some reasons i am being asked to move the whole installation to DNN 4.3.5 on SQL Server 2005 on a different machine. If I install the module on my DNN 3 site and create a backup, install a fresh install of DNN 4 (Sql 2005) on target machine and install the module again and restore, would i get my website upgraded in DNN4 ?? Or is there any other way to achieve this?? Many Thanks Arif
A:  >>...would i get my website upgraded in DNN4 ? I'm afraid that no. The module can "clone" your sites but not upgrade them. To upgrade you will need to follow the advices provided on the DNN documentation and forums HTH, Horacio.-

Q:  Hello! This sounds like a great product and some of the questions asked are similar to my one db issue. Since switching from SQL2k to SQL2k5 I've lost features in the previous version of SQL Server's Import/Export wizard, which gave me full control over when and what I wanted to backup/restore. The SQL2k5 Import/Export wizard only allows syncing tables, views, and the data. I use CrystalTech's shared hosting services and have dbo credentials, but a task such as "Backup" or "Restore" is prohibited, as you noted, and the new SSIS Import/Export wizard has the table and views only restriction just noted. The way I work is that I build and enhance my ASP.NET application with SQL 2k5 as the db locally, then FTP the IIS files to my Internet site. I then have to open a support ticket to have my database "restored", from a backup I create. What I miss is the control of backing up and transferring db changes between my local and remote environments. Does BackupNative and/or BackupScript have the capabilities that would allow me to backup and update my db schema, including stored procedures making identical copies from local to remote and vice versa for my SQL 2k5 database? BTW, regarding the questions about being able to backup/restore individual portals, perhaps you could hook into DNN's export template w/data utility. I used this when upgrading from 3.x to 4.x w/o a hitch for my multi-portal setup. Thanks!
A:  Hi John, Thanks for asking. With BackupNative you can take a complete "snapshot" (standard SQL Server backup) of your FULL database that can be restored on any SQLServer instance. For the BackupNative approach you'll need permissions to perform backups (this ca be more difficult if your database is "remote") and you may need permission for restoring (or commonly; ask your ISP to do it for you). With BackupScript you can get the "scripts" to recreate the main database objects (tables, viewsm procs, funcs, etc) and data. Those scipts can be issued on another already created database (empty or not) to get a "copy" of the original database. This works and many users already did it, but you may encounter some difficulties (that can be resolved) like odd stored procs, too many inserts/updates can turn your database log out of space (depending on how the server was configured), etc. Regarding to the DNN export feature, it's a great idea but usually bad/incomplete implemented (or not implemented at all) by 3rd. party modules and also some core modules too. e.g. may be the module's data can be exported/imported but not its setting. So, you still have to check/fix every module/page on your imported portal. Let us know if you have any other question/comment. support@evotiva.com Thanks! Horacio.-

Q:  Does it work with Godaddy hosting packages? Allowing, full DB backup and restore? Tks, Dennis
A:  Hi, GoDaddy shared hosted plan doesn't allows database backups. I don't know if another of their plans allows it. Regards, H.- October 2006 update - BackupScript module WILL work with Godaddy hosting packages

Q:  HI I have DNN 3.1.1 and would like to update to the newest version of DNN 3.. will your program help me from having to rebuild my site from ground 0 ? or the back up I will make of my site will not work with upgraded version of a site ? I am looking into saving files , content, users and modules/ Thanks
A:  This module allows you to take a "snapshot" of your site (database and files). That is, your files , content, users and modules. Sorry, but I don't understand the update question. To update your DNN just follow the regular DNN setup instructions. If something goes wrong you can go back restoring the snapshot taken by the module, or you can test first the upgrade locally over a restored copy of the snapshot. HTH, Horacio.-

Q:  HI I have DNN 3.1.1
A:  ..

Q:  I have a site using DNN 3.0.13 I have had a hard time upgrading so I want to copy everything and move the site to another server to practice the upgrade with hurting my 500 plus users. Can I use this module to backup and restore all including 3rd party modules and not loose my users?
A:  YES. The module can backup your FULL site. That is, FULL database plus all the files under your web root. Please check the module requirements (you need 'backup' permissions over the database, etc. If BackupNative cannot be run on your ISP you can try the BackupScrip module.

Q:  Are you backing up all the MSSQL data or only the data pertaining to the current portal? In other words, in a multi portal environment, are we backing up all the data for all portals?
A:  As stated in the documentation, - please read it, you will find more details and useful answers there :-) - this module performs a native MSSQL backup. and thus we backing up all the data for all portals. "Per portal" backup is a feature on the "wish list" for the BackupScript module.

Q:  Hi. I am confused by the number of backup products your company offers. I have a DNN 4.x installation. What are the differences between the features in the backup products you offer for DNN 4.x and how do I decide which one to buy. I do not need source code. Thanks, Bill
A:  Yes, I understand... It's confuse... There are two different modules: BackupNative (formerly BackupLite - even more confusing, isn't it?) and BackupScript. BackupNative is published on DNN3 and DNN4 Snowcovered listings, but is exactly the same product and both packages includes all the necessary to properly be installed on any DNN3 and DNN4. BackupNative is currently published only on the DNN3 listing because the DNN4 version is not yet openly available.

Q:  Does it work if the SQL database is on remote computer with no drive shares? If yes, can i take the database off-site (download it)? What if I dont have backup/restore permissions?
A:  With "backup rights" over the database, you doesn't need drive shares for the database backup to be completed, as is all done on the remote computer. But certainly you need a way to get the backup file "from outside". You should ask your ISP if this is possible. You can review the Documentation's FAQ section for details. Another module (BackupScript - http://www.evotiva.com/Modules/BackupScript/tabid/57/Default.aspx) can backup/restore your data no matter if your database is on remote computer and no matter if you have backup/restore permissions; but it is not yet ready for DNN4 (annoying threading issues we are working on)

Q:  Can you configure the module to run via the DNN Schedule (thus allowing you to schedule backups)?
A:  YES. You can directly configure those setting (e-mail notification included) on the module's setting, "Scheduling" section. You can review the module's documentation for more details. http://www.evotiva.com/Modules/BackupNative/tabid/56/Default.aspx

Q:  the PA's I received in my purchase only include pa's up to 3.1.1.. should I just the highest version .. I am running this on 3.2.2 instance.
A:  Yes. For 3.2.2, 4.0.2 and 4.03 you should use the 311 package.

Q:  Hi there, has there been any progress on this feature: I'm looking for a backup tool that will allow me to backup per child portal on my server. So that if one home page owner on one portal deletes all of their modules I can restore just that portal instead of having to restore the database for everyone. Will your tool allow restoring for selective portals only? A: Current version doesn't allows a per portal backup or restore. There are options to choose what to include/exclude in some degree. (\Portals, \DesktopModules, web.config, \bin, etc. ) For the \Portals branch the module allows you to exclude the \_default (Host) subfolder. But you can't specify to include \0 (Portal "A") and \1 (Portal "B¨) but exclude \2 (Portal "C"). Initially I'd planned to allow which portals to include, but since it does a full database backup (includes all tables/records for all portals) it wasn't be fine. To do a per portal backup and restore, an SQL database backup (and restore) isn't the right answer. A different approach is needed. May be in the future I'll implement this, but this in fact that will be totally different module. Thanks! Scott
A:  Yes, there has been some progress but I cannot find an "user friendly" way to do it. Any solution implies a detailed knowlege of all the portal tables how are related... I think this will be very difficult to implement for the average user, or I am wrong?

Q:  I use dnn 4 on discountasp server. 2 thiings; which version do i use and second to you have an example for discountasp.net sites? my download has: - Use "GrupoSur.BackupLite_dnn3.0.x_Install.zip" for DNN 3.0.12 or 3.0.13 - Use "GrupoSur.BackupLite_dnn3.1.0_Install.zip" for DNN 3.1 - Use "GrupoSur.BackupLite_dnn3.1.1_Install.zip" for DNN 3.1.1
A:  Sorry the dealy, I didn't get the SnowCovered notification of your FAQ post!! 1) For DNN 3.2.2 and DNN 4.x just use the "DNN 3.1.1" package. 2) do you mean if I know if the module will work on discountasp.net? Sorry, but I don't know... But you can just install it, test it (and let me know) Regards.

Q:  Can the module be configured to backup everything BUT the Portals folder?
A:  Currently you can exclude the Portal's "host" folder (\Portals\_default) by configuring the "Include 'Host' folder: No" setting; but there is no option to also exclude the remining \Portals subfolders. I'll add this option too, to make it more flexlible. Some features currently in research/developement are: - backup any database on the same way regarding of it is local or remote - per-portal backup - restore

Q:  Hi Will the GrupoSur BackupLite PRO edition work on DNN 4.0.2? Do I need any special access than the one that comes usually with a hosting account to install and use this product? Thanks, Vijay
A:  GrupoSur BackupLite PRO edition was successfully tested on DNN 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 >>Do I need any special access than the one that comes usually with a hosting account to install and use this product? Please refer to the notes regarding to "remote database" for issues that may affect this module functionality

Q:  Can this make a backup from a databse where the database is in another server ?
A:  YES, but you should configure a real well known folder path on the database server where the backup file will be created. Also you should ask your hosting for a way to access that file form outside, anyway the backup will be created but will be useless.

Q:  Will this backup module work in a hosted environment. I am needing a backup solution for a Godaddy manual install of DNN. I did not use the one click install of dnn, but manually installed dnn.
A:  Due to many people requesting this feature; Current version of BackupScript module WILL work with GoDaddy shared hosting.

Q:  Is BackupLight PRO tested and supported on DNN 4.0.02? I've installed the free version which seems to function correctly.
A:  I've don't tested it yet on DNN 4.x but I think it should works OK. If not, let me know and we'll fix it.

Q:  Can your software perform a restore on a different machine. For example, I made my site on a test server and want to move it on a production server. Thnx!
A:  Sure you can!. In that case, just follow the regular restore procedure outlined on another one item on this FAQ list, just taking into account to also check the SQL connection string on the web.config file and also changing at least one record of the PortalAlias table. i.e.: UPDATE PortalAlias SET HTTPAlias = 'MY_REAL_ALIAS' WHERE PortalAliasID = 1 HTH!

Q:  I have the Lite Version---I can backup but I see no way to restore???
A:  Currently, the modue does not support automated restores. You can check the FAQ "What is the process for restoring a backup" at "Questions from other customers" on: http://www.snowcovered.com/snowcovered2/Default.aspx?r=1d23bbb0a1&tabid=166&CatalogItemID=2236 There are detailed instructions to perform an SQL Server restore.

Q:  If SQL is on a differnt Server than the Web Server, is there any way to access the file? From reading your description the backup file is only available if SQL is on the same server. Can you clarify this? Thanks.
A:  Since the sql backup file is created on another box not under "control" of the web server. It cannot be accessed in any way. May be possible in some special scenarios but that will not be the more standard/usual case. ie.: with proper rights (permissions) and knowledge (network topology) of the Web + DataBase servers you can set up this folder to something like \\mywebservershare\mysiteroot\backup or \\mywebservername\c$\mysiteroot\backup or \\200.100.50.20\c$\mysiteroot\backup. This way, your remote database backup will ends in your local web site database backup folder. And you can work with it like any other file under the web site root.

Q:  I need to be able to backup individual portals/child portals from one dotnetnuke installation and restore them to another dotnetnuke installation. Is this possible? When will you have something that can perform these tasks. Thank you, Franc
A:

Current version doesn't allows a per portal backup or restore.

There are options to choose what to include/exclude in some degree. (\Portals, \DesktopModules, web.config, \bin, etc. )
For the \Portals branch the module allows you to exclude the \_default (Host) subfolder. But you can't specify to include \0 (Portal "A") and \1 (Portal "B¨) but exclude \2 (Portal "C").

Q:  Is This Module Supported DNN 3.2.0? AND Do you have plan to test on DNN 3.2.0 ? Regards
A:  The current GrupoSur.BackupLitePRO_dnn3.1.1_Install.zip package was successfully tested under DNN 3.2. Regards!

Q:  Can this module be applied to NLB(Network Load Balance)SYSTEM? I would like to use this module for Replication...
A:  Hi, thank you for asking! But please, could you be more specific? What would be your scenario? Thank you again

Q:  I'm looking for a backup tool that will allow me to backup per child portal on my server. Q:  When will BackupLite backup all the files?
A:  Hi, Since v. 2.0.2, BackupLite can backup all the files and folder on the site (including DNN installation files).

Q:  What is the process for restoring a backup. Let's assume that everything was wiped out. Thanks! Shawn
A:  Hi Shawn, thank you for asking!

The process is like follows (updated Oct 10, 2005):
  • At the web root folder, unzip the portal data zip file backup generated with Gruposur BackupLite PRO (1)
  • Unzip the database backup file generated with Gruposur BackupLite PRO and perform an SQL database restore. (2)
However, the actual steps to do will depend on the kind of access to the server you may have: if you have direct access to the server in which the installation was running (meaning physical, Terminal Server, Radmin, or the like) it will be much easier than in a remote hosting scenario, in which again it will depend on the tools made available to you by your hosting provider: i.e. console app., ftp, etc.

If you are restoring a crashed site, check the reason of the accident, since there might be hanging processes on the server that prevent files to be overwritten, a database to be restored, etc..

If you are performing the restore on a different domain/server/box remember:

  • check your web.config file (sql server connection string)
  • check your PortalAlias table
  • check the file server permissions
  • check the regular installation instructions for DNN

(1) assuming everything was included on it (all options checked: include web.config file and  Host, bin, Modules & other folders)

(2) Restoring an SQLServer database backup:

Remember that a database cannot be in use to be restored.
Also you have to deal with the restrictions that your ISP imposed to your SQL account..
WWith the necessary permissions you could kill all current connections (asp.net may keep some opened although nobody seems to be accessing your site) and then perform a restore but unless you are your own ISP, chances that you can perform this type of operations are very low.

To perform a local restore, you can use the Enterprise Manager (the graphical way).
The manual way involves the use of Query Analyzer (if you have SQL Sever) or any tool that allows you to perform t-sql commands against the SQL server.
Note: the backup file to be restored should be on the same box than the SQLServer. (i.e you cannot restore a file from \\myshare\folder\mybackup.bkp)

Manual steps (the most generic I could think):

-- First you should find the ogicalName and PhysicalName of the original database
RESTORE FILELISTONLY
FROM DISK = 'c:\mysite.bkp'
GO

-- Then you can perform the restore operation (if nobody is using it)
-- You should replace 'c:\mysite.bkp', 'logical_data',
-- 'C:\myfolder\mysubfolder\mydatabase_Data.MDF', etc. with the real ones

restore database mydatabase
FROM DISK = 'c:\mysite.bkp'
WITH
   MOVE 'logical_data'
     TO 'C:\myfolder\mysubfolder\mydatabase_Data.MDF',
   MOVE 'logical_log'
     TO 'C:\myfolder\mysubfolder\mydatabase_Data.LDF'
GO

Note: to know who is locking a database you can use "sp_who" and to kill the desired processes you can issue "kill" commands.
