AuthIntegrator - The Easy Way to Integrate DNN with ASP.NET Applications
AuthIntegrator v1.2.0 allows your DNN 4.3.5+ portal to easily and securely control the authentication and authorization of your external ASP.NET 1.1 and 2.0 applications. It’s easy to install and configure, and users can even bookmark their favorite pages in the external application! Works with all versions 4.3.5+.
Features:
- Compatible with DNN versions 4.3.5+.
- Fast and easy to install and configure
- Works with both ASP.NET 1.1 and 2.0 external applications
- Even works across subdomains
- Includes detailed user guide with step by step instructions
- No code changes required for ASP.NET 2.0 applications
- ASP.NET 2.0 applications can be nested within DNN or be a peer virtual directory of DNN (i.e. neither DNN or the application are at the site root).
- ASP.NET 1.1 applications require minor code change to remove existing authorization code from global.asax
- Includes sample 1.1 and 2.0 applications with example configurations of the web.config files to save you time
- Has a built-in debug mode to quickly troubleshoot configuration issues
- Fully supported
- Module is PA, Source available
- Changes from v1.1.0 include improved redirection from DNN 4.5+ sites, and localhost now included as valid url.
How Does It Work?
After uploading the module, you place it on a page and configure the application URL and a Shared Secret (used like a password, I recommend a strong password such as grc.com/passwords.htm provides) options.

Next, set the page security to be visible only to the portal roles that will have permissions in your external application. When navigating to this page, users with Edit permissions will see the settings screen, while other users are redirected to the configured URL.
In the external application, you configure it for Shared Forms Authentication and set the loginUrl to be the path to the page containing the AuthIntegrator module. There is also a HttpModule to register in the web.config and then place in your application's bin folder.
When a user visits the DNN page containing the module (from link or navigation), after successfully logging in they are redirected to the configured URL. Even better - if they try to directly access a page in the external application, they will be directed to the DNN login page, after which they will be sent to the original page they requested. This means users can bookmark their favorite pages in the external application.
The DotNetNuke® and ASP.NET web applications must be configured for, and are subject to, all the rules and usage guidelines of Forms Authentication. Most notably, this means that the portal and application must belong to the same domain.

S says... 5.0
I never write reviews of purchases. This is my first. AuthIntegrator is a small footprint module that widely expands the possibilities for me with DNN. I have legacy projects that were unwieldy to port into DNN (I did not know where to start). I also have some of my own homegrown asp.net projects with visual studio, but I am not quite ready to get them to install inside of DNN (I am worried about corrupting my installation). With this module, I can run these outside of dnn, but use all of the login and roles that dnn supplies. This module, more than any I have purchased, allows me to make DNN my central application, and customize it well beyond what I thought I could do.
But it was the customer service, not the module itself, that finally convinced me to write my first review. Over the last week, my server and DNN configuration were interfering with getting the module working. Clearly this was a problem with my software and not AuthIntegrator. Ask a Question
|
Q:
Will it work with DNN 5.5 and a .Net 4 app?
A:
Yes it should. If you have issues I will help you.
|
|
Q:
Does your module allow my external application to access the current user id like (UserInfo.UserID)? I need access to that information write to the correct information in a database table.
A:
You do not have access to the DNN USerInfo object, but you do have access to the username they are logged into DNN with.

Q:
Hi,
I have an asp.net site on the same domain as my dnn installation. I want to show the external site inside of an iFrame module to take advantage of the role-based security.
I need a way to prevent people from getting to the external asp.net site unless they are coming from within the iframe.
Will this module let me execute a call from my external site and verify that the user is logged onto my DNN site?
Thanks.
A:
Hi Tom,
Sorry the authentication is 1 way - from your DNN site to the external site. I have often thought of exending this to an authenticated IFrame. If that is something that interests you - please contact me via the contact form on my site and we can discuss.
Regards,
Shawn

A:
Yes.

Question:
Hi, I want to use an external database (Joomla portal) to authenticate users when they login to a DNN portal. That means when user Bill (who is a registered user on Joomla portal) logs in with the same user name and password on the DNN portal, we should be able to remotely connect to the mySQL database of the Joomla portal and verify the credentials. Can I do this with your PA module? Has anyone used your module for linking with Joomla? Thanks in advance! Vijay
A:
Hi Jijay - I don't think this module will work for you. The external site must be using ASP.NET Forms Authentication.

Q:
whats about support for asp.net 3.5?
A:
It was compiled with version 2.0 of the .NET Framework and so should work with no issues on later versions.

Q:
Hi,
Pls let me know if i can acheive this using your module.
I have a dnn forum and my friend has his own website. We want to integrate both the website and forum. So if a user has signed up for his website he should be able to directly log in to my forum and should be able to post messages etc.Similarly if a user is signed up in my dnn forum he should be able to log on to his website automatically and should be able to do all the things like posting, reading etc which a normal user would do on his website.
please let me know if this is possible by using your module.
shree.
A:
The authentication is designed to work 1 way i.e. DNN users will be able to log into your friend's site and have authorizations as dictated by DNN roles. Existing users in the membership of the external site will no longer be able to log in there. Only valid DNN users will have access.
It may be possible to come up with a customized solution for you. Send an email to support@bluetango.ca if you would like a quote.
Thanks for your interest.

Q:
Is it possible to get a copy of the user manual for this module before purchasing it?
A:
If you view the FAQs for the module on my web site (http://www.bluetango.ca/Products/AuthIntegratorModule/tabid/121/Default.aspx) you get a pretty good description for how it works and what is involved and the types of scenarios it can be used in. It is not possible to provide a copy of the user manual without purchasing the module as the knowledge in how to properly configure and set things up is part of what I am selling. If you purchase it and we cannot get it to work I will happily refund your money (I have not had to issue a single refund yet).

Q:
How does this deal with roles. I have an existing Non-DNN applications that uses roles to determine what the user can and can't see on the same page. Does your module allow me to set the roles used in that application through DNN or copy those roles from DNN to the application instance? I actually have several applications that use roles to manager the actions that a user can do, so if your system handles roles, i'd be very interested in it.
A:
It was designed to work in exactly that situation. Within DNN you must configure your users to have all the roles your external application requires. You then configure the allowable roles in the external app's web.config. Now within the external application code you can check for the user roles in exactly the same way.

Q:
I have purchased your version 1.1.0. Can you tell the difference between the two and if there are any discounts for those who have purchased the previous version?
Thanks,
Jerry
A:
Existing customers can upgrade for free to the latest version by downloading it in the patches and hot fixes section.
If you are running DNN 4.5+ you should upgrade. Changes from v1.1.0 include improved redirection from DNN 4.5+ sites, and "localhost" now included as valid url.
